Hey Everyone, Reygon here again but with a new article style. I am going to be reviewing the new Gearwin contender as a whole instead of as a specific deck tech.
Gearwin jumped out to me as an exceptionally strong contender because both of her contender abilities are extremely relevant and powerful.
Her 20 ability allows you to turn diminish into card selection and card draw. Simply playing bombardment with gearwin lets you deal 3 damage, diminish 3 cards and select one of those cards and put them into your hand for the small price of 1 health. If you notice, you also just "put" the card to hand, you arent drawing it, so you cant be stopped from card draw tax effects. This is exceptionally powerful because you are getting to see multiple cards and select the best one for you at the time.
Gearwin's second ability turns her into an absolute tank of a contender. Once you get to 12 health, you can counter attack and give her 3 defense until end of clash for a minimum of 4 defense. If you build your deck with cards that include discover you can get that bonus until the end of turn! On top of that you also get to activate her 20 ability and select one of those cards you just diminished to put into your had, oh my. If 4 defense isnt enough, you can pile on her clash buff card Engineered Execution to bump up her stats to be a 2/6 until end of turn on top of drawing 2 more cards. Her 12 ability counts as activating the trap, so you 100% get the bonus card draw and stats.
So Gearwin allows you to draw a ton of cards and becomes very tanky once you hit 12 health but what does that mean? Well it means she is set up well to be a late game control contender. It forces the opponent to overextend cards into play to ensure they get enough damage through before her 6 defense wall can be established for multiple turns in a row. But, with cards like here comes the boom, she can wipe the board and take out multiple clash cards for the cost of 1 putting her opponent behind in pace and in cards. This can put your opponent into a lose lose situation! Her strong defense and high card draw/selection is why I think she will be best suited as a control contender!
So really the only "required" cards in a strong Gearwin build is bombardment (for early removal and card draw), Engineered Execution (for defense enhancement and card draw), and a board wipe like Boom. Another strong card that Gearwin likes to play is Iron Piston, Mechborn Juggernaut. IPMJ works well with Gearwin from his trigger attack, discover ability and the ease to activate the magnitude 15 to be a elusive and powerful finisher! The direction you can go from there are endless and will leave up to the community to be creative with.
The question I will leave up to the community is how to build her to take advantage of her powerful kit.
Thanks for reading!
